Artificial Intelligence (AI) has once again become a hot topic due to the permeation of AI-powered language models such as ChatGPT in the public discourse and professional services. But what can it do to enhance web accessibility? More importantly, what harm can it do to it? Is it the prophesied end-all accessibility solution that will put us all out of work? Can a developer who knows nothing about accessibility still create accessible web content using AI?

This presentation explores the dual role that Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) plays when it comes to web accessibility. On the one hand, it can be a powerful aid for people with disabilities, enabling dynamic content adaptation, offering voice navigation, and providing automated descriptions for inaccessible images and videos. On the other hand, removing the human aspect from accessible web-design tasks can easily lead to harder-to-discover accessibility obstacles.

Our talk highlights the potential influences of AI/ML on web content for its developers, accessibility professionals, and people with disabilities. Through practical examples, we’ll illustrate the good, the bad, and the ugly that AI has to offer web accessibility as we attempt to answer the question: Is there room for AI in A11Y?
